The Belgian GP 2010
Spa-Francorchamps
Ah, Spa. How I eagerly await your appearance in the race calendar! This year we have the added bonus of the continuation of the enthralling (yet strangely tedious at the same time) Red Bull Rivalry which I have decided to name Project Waa-he-has-better-toys-than-me… ‘Project Waa’ for short.
Throughout this season this has gone from pseudo-bitterness to all out hurling of the toys from the pram and frankly, it’s giving drama series writers some serious competition for bitchiness and looks that could kill.
Spa seems to have wrapped up neatly previous opinion that this was to be Sebastian Vettel’s year, which is a shame as he has this season provided some beautiful drives yet all anyone will remember is the pouting and ‘sadfacing’ he has become famous for. I am sorely disappointed in Mark Webber for sinking to this level too. His ‘not bad for a number 2 driver’ was almost lyrical in its perfection at ‘sticking it to the man’ however he seems to have built up brattish momentum like his team-mate and is still having the occasional whine.
I would like to point out here and now that a little arrogance and pettiness is not necessarily a bad thing in F1. Subscribers to my ‘old school’ blog will be aware I’m madly in love with Fernando Alonso and his gigantic…. ego (I could have said eyebrows, I chose not to) and think his rivalry with Lewis Hamilton was sporting drama at its best, showcasing what happens when ego meets new talent. However, Vettel and Webber have managed to make it annoying. I want to bang their heads together in an oh-so-maternal manner and tell them to play nice. It’s Mark Webbers season to win now though, as a comeback for Seb is extremely unlikely at this stage. He should feel free to try to prove me wrong; I welcome a down to the wire fight.
Ego’s and huffiness aside, Belgium did not disappoint this year. Nothing pleases me more than seeing rain warnings; especially on such a brilliant track. It truly encourages some spectacular driving, so I felt like a kid at Christmas. From Mark Webber’s terrible start in which he reminded me of myself during one of my first driving lessons, to Seb Vettel deciding he was driving a dodgem and colliding with Jenson Button, to my beloved Alonso spinning and giving the safety car some extra work for the day; Spa once again showed why it is a fan favourite.
With six races left to go and the new 2010 point system, it really is, in theory, all to play for. However my gut instinct tells me, this is a two-man race between Lewis Hamilton and Mark Webber. My favourite for the title? I’m glad you asked! Personally I would love to see Webber win. Over the years he has continued to provide great entertainment and brilliant drives. My only hope is that he doesn’t allow his competitive position to let him sink into the bad habit of moaning his way through the rest of the season as the last thing we need is another moody World Champion who doesn’t seem to enjoy what he’s doing.
I thank you for staying awake to the end of my first contribution. Please feel free to comment or email me.
Till next time!
